This pea soup ham recipe is perfect if you’re looking for healthy and hearty recipes that help you eat vegetables.
Pea soup with ham
This was my favorite soup growing up as a kid. My Oma (Dutch for Grandma) would make this for me and it’s absolutely delicious. My Mom also makes it and this recipe is a combination of both their recipes. Here is my Oma’s original recipe card that she made me with the rest of the instructions on the back.
Tips for freezing the pea soup with ham
Even though I am the only person that eats this recipe, I actually double it and make it in a huge stockpot. Then I freeze the soup in three containers and put them in a freezer and have soup for months! It thaws really well but sometimes it loses a bit of moisture. After the container is thawed in the fridge I scoop the soup out and pour a little bit of water on top and stir it around, then I microwave it and it tastes just the same as when I cooked it.
Pea soup with ham recipe
Ingredients
1 lb. bag dried split peas
1/4 lb. diced ham (Or one Hillshire sausage diced up)
2 medium russet potatoes
1 yellow onion (Or half an onion depending on your taste, I use half)
8 cups water
2 Tablespoons instant chicken bouillon (Two cubes)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1-2 Tablespoons olive oil
OPTIONAL: Chopped carrots or chopped celery
OPTIONAL: One bunch of parsley
Instructions
Pour the dried peas into a strainer and pick out any pieces that don’t look good. Rinse peas and place in a bowl. Pour water over the peas until fully submerged. Cover and let soak for 12-24 hours.
In a large pot (I double my recipe so I use a big stockpot) pour olive oil, add onion and potatoes (and optional carrots or celery), cook for two minutes, stirring frequently.
Add 8 cups of water, chicken bouillon, and salt. Bring to a boil.
Pour all the excess water out of the soaked split peas and put split peas into the boiling pot with ham (or Hillshire sausage).
Reduce heat to simmer and stir every once in a while until peas are tender and mostly dissolved - about 1 hour.
If the soup is too thick, add more water. Serve hot by itself or with garlic bread.
I hope you enjoy my favorite Dutch split pea soup with ham recipe from my Mom and Oma!
