Easy Butter Cookies Recipe

The butter cookie recipe isn’t from a book, it’s an easy recipe my Aunt used to always make at Christmas and I became completely obsessed with the melt-in-your-mouth dessert. When I got older I asked her for the recipe and now I make them for Christmas every year. But these cookies are perfect for baking for any holiday, you can just change the frosting color!

These butter cookies are always a hit at my family’s Christmas and my family will double-check with me every year if I’ll be making them.

Cookie Ingredients

  • 1 lb. very softened butter

  • 4 cups flour

  • 8 Tablespoons powdered sugar

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Frosting Ingredients For Two Frosting Colors

  • 2 cups of powdered sugar

  • 2 Tablespoons of water

  • 2 drops of food coloring

Instructions

  • Leave the sticks of butter out on the counter until they are completely soft and at room temperature

  • In a large bowl, combine butter and sugar using your hands

  • Add flour and vanilla and mix together well with hands

  • Take a small amount of dough and roll a ball, around the width of a quarter

  • Push your thumb into the center of the ball where the frosting will go

  • Place on a nonstick cookie sheet

  • Place in a 350-degree oven for 12-15 minutes

  • To prepare the frosting place one cup of powdered sugar in a bowl per frosting color. I make green and pink so I use two cups of powdered sugar and two bowls.

  • Add 1 T of water in each bowl and 1 drop of food coloring in each, this will create a pastel color. If you would like the color to be darker then add another drop or two.

  • Mix well, the consistency should be somewhat thick so the frosting doesn’t flow too easily off the cookie

  • Spoon frosting into the cookie’s thumb print hole

There you have it, my family’s favorite cookie recipe of all time! Plus it’s insanely easy and you don’t have to roll out any dough or use a piping bag. I like to whip these up really quick on Christmas Eve Eve and they take no time at all.
