Let's create this adorable Halloween craft! A flower power groovy ghost made with vintage sheets and retro inspired fabric. It's an easy no sew craft project that anyone with a glue gun can DIY. The little upcycle fabric ghosts are the most festive 1970s inspired Halloween decorations. I got the idea to do this because I dressed up as a vintage sheet ghost and I loved it so much I wanted it a part of my decor.

Flower Power Fabric

For the groovy ghosts, I used a combination of vintage sheets, vintage pillowcases and new fabric from my own Spoonflower shop. I have flower power and wildflower options that you can see below, I used the green daisy print for the ghosts.

How to make a tabletop ghost Halloween decoration

Cut the fabric

Lay the fabric on top of the styrofoam ball and then smush it down and cut around the bottom, if anything I cut extra because if I cut it too short then I can’t use it. You want the fabric to lay just above the ground, around 1/4 inch. Then take the fabric off and lay it flat. Cut it into a neat circle and then I if you have other recyclables that are the same size you can use this circle as a template for other ghosts that are the same height.

You can see exactly how I do this in the tutorial video below:

You’ll have some scraps of fabric when you’re done with this project. Don’t throw them away! Check out my post on 12 Sewing Projects to Use Up Fabric Scraps.

Cut out ghost eyes and a mouth

Now that you have your ghost form you need eyes and a mouth! Cut out 2 felt ovals for the eyes and a circle for the mouth. If you’re making multiple ghosts you can use the first ones you cut as a template to cut out some more.

Do I sew the fabric ends or leave them unfinished?

I leave the edges unfinished to make it extra easy! We’re not putting the ghosts in the washing machine so I’m not worried about it fraying. I make vintage sheet bunting and I leave the edges unfinished. They blow in the breeze when I have the windows open and I’ve never had the edges fray.

Hot glue the fabric

Place the fabric over the ghost exactly how you want the fabric to lay. Once you like the placement, hold the fabric down with one or two fingers on the head of the ghost. Take your other hand and peel the fabric back over your hand. Now you’ll be able to place a bead of hot glue on the top of the styrofoam ball. I put a dime size amouth on the top of the head. Then lay the fabric back down and press in place.

Once the glue has hardened in a few seconds, hold the fabric down in that spot with your fingers and repeat the process for the back of the head. Peel the fabric back so you can place a quarter size amount of glue on the back of the head. We don’t want the fabric to go anywhere but we also don’t want a big blob of hard glue on the front face. Place most of the glue on the back where you won’t see it.

Put on the ghost face

Now take your two felt eyes and mouth and lay flat on your table. Place a bead of hot glue and put the eyes and mouth on your ghost.
