I travelled up north to Petoskey and Harbor Springs in Michigan for two days in September. I stayed in a vintage 1970s camper that I found on AirBNB. It’s a cute canned ham campervan and was really cheap to stay at. It's an affordable Alanson, MI Airbnb option if you're traveling up north.
Staying in a 1970s vintage camper
I stayed in a groovy 1970s camper called Hammie on AirBnb. This was my very first time camping and I had that on my fall bucket list (Click here to print a FREE autumn bucket list)! I didn’t want to stay in a tent for my first time so a campervan is a great first step before trying out tent camping.
It cost $40 a night as of September 2022.
What is a canned ham campervan?
Canned ham campers look just like tins of ham which is how they got their name. They’re made of metal and can come in super cute colors. You can learn about the history of canned ham campers here.
Vintage 70s camper interior
What convinced me to book this camper was the flower power dinette set. It’s SO cute and I had to see it in person.
I have a flower power dining set of my own which you can see in my vintage dining room tour.
Bring your flower power luggage
I had to bring a flower power suitcase to display in the camper. It held all my accessories for my trip and looked perfect on the dining table.
You can watch a video tour of the camper below!
Retro avocado kitchen
How cute are these avocado appliances?! I didn’t try using the stove because there was a burn pit where we had bonfires each night for dinner. But the fridge worked SO well that my fruit started freezing. Old appliances are the best!
Camper bed
The bed was definitely not the most comfortable thing in the world which isn’t surprising. But I loved that on the bed they had a vintage afghan because I collect those!
Up north visiting Harbor Springs and Petoskey, Michigan
The camper is in Alanson, Michigan which is a great location to stay in if you’re visiting Petoskey and Harbor Springs. You can read more about my trip in my guide for visiting Petoskey, MI and my guide for visiting Harbor Springs & the Tunnel of Trees.
Dutch Oven Bakery in Alanson, MI
We made sure to stop by the tiny Alanson downtown and found the delicious Dutch Oven Bakery. We visited twice and ate donuts.
While you’re in the area be sure to stop by Pond Hill Farm, it’s one of the best places I’ve ever visited up north!
First time camping experience
Overall I loved staying in the camper. It was a totally unique experience and definitely something every vintage lover should try. I’m not sure I want to bother with tent camping because having the camper was very convenient!
