Hanging bunting always makes a home feel festive and joyful. I love saving my favorite vintage fabric scraps and sewing them into bunting so I can appreciate them.

I've made mini bunting for my sewing room out of feedsack fabric scraps. You can purchase feedsack fabric at this link.

I've made large bunting out of vintage sheets for my wedding.

Now I'm making medium bunting to hang on some shelves in my bedroom. I'm using vintage sheet fabric scraps and double fold bias tape which you can buy here. When I sew bunting I only do a single layer of fabric and keep the edges raw. I've never had a problem with the edges fraying, even when I've had the fabric outside in the wind.

How to Sew Bunting

Start by measuring the area that you'd like to hang your bunting. I normally take my bias tape and tape it in place to know exactly how much I need. I've made the mistake of measuring an area and forgetting to add extra length for the drapey effect.

Pick out the fabric you’d like to work with. I wanted to use some of my favorite vintage sheets in rainbow order. Check out Vintage Fabric Studios on Etsy for some adorable vintage sheet packs!

Cut a flag pattern out of paper. For a medium size bunting I measured 5 by 4.5 inches. But the pattern is completely customizable, cut out some triangle shapes and see what size looks good to you.

Decide how spaced out you'd like your flags to be so you know how many you need to cut. I don’t like there to be any space between my flags, I like them all right next to each other. Cut out your fabric flags.

Fit the flags inside the bias tape and space them out how you'd like them to hang. I’m using these quilt clips for bunting because it doesn't pierce the binding tape. But pins work good too if that's what you have.

Sew the binding closed over the flags. Really take your time sewing because you don't have a lot to hold onto since the binding is so thin. Be sure to front and back stitch at the two ends of the bias tape.

Hang your bunting! I always just use clear Scotch tape. But you could always use thumb tacks, nails, putty, etc. depending on where you want to hang it.

I love how it turned out! It really pulls the room together and uses up cute fabric scraps too. I hope you give bunting making a try! If you do be sure to show me what you make on my Instagram.
