Who doesn’t love a vintage Christmas tin? Let’s make some ourselves by upcycling canisters into retro holiday decorations. We’ll wrap the recyclables in vintage wrapping paper to make them look like tins! This is an easy craft that anyone can DIY. You can use these tins as home decor or to put baked goods inside to give away as a holiday gift!
Supply List
Canisters to upcycle - Peanut, oatmeal, Pringles, and cheese puff containers
Scissors
Ruler
Tape measure
You can watch my talk about these tins and 6 other vintage wrapping paper crafts in the video below.
Wash out the recycle containers
Start by rinsing out the containers and drying the inside. The oatmeal container wasn’t very dirty but the cheese puff one needed to be washed with dish soap.

Measure out your vintage wrapping paper
Measure the area of the canister you want to be covered in wrapping paper. On most of my canisters there were two thin metal bands around the top and bottom. You’ll want to take the lid off and measure just the flat surface of the canister, in between the metal bands.
Then mark that measurement on the back of your wrapping paper and use your ruler to draw a straight line across. You can wrap your measuring tape around the canister to see how long your wrapping paper will need to be to go all the way around.
Trim the wrapping paper
See how the wrapping paper is a bit too big/tall? I cut a bit off and it fits snugly between the two metal bands on the top and bottom of the canister.
Tape the paper to the tin
Place your double sided tape on the canister. Place one end of the wrapping paper along the tape to adhere.
Place tape along the other end of the wrapping paper. Wrap the paper around the canister to overlap over the other end you taped down. Place the lid back on and you’re all done!
