Couples can really embrace their love of vintage fashion through Halloween costumes. This post will have a range of antique, vintage and retro costumes. There’s something for everyone here and I tried to list costumes that are classic but also not very mainstream.
Mary Poppins and Bert
We thrifted our Mary Poppins and Bert costumes and it was so easy to do. It was a real crowd pleaser too. We wore the costumes around NYC and I got stopped multiple times for photos and little kids really loved it! I took inspiration from Keiko Lynn’s Mary Poppins and Bert costume.
Phantom of the Opera
On my costume to do list is Phantom of the Opera. This would be a great way to reuse a wedding dress OR you could find an ornate wedding dress at a thrift store to use!
Sleepy Hollow
Last year we dressed up as Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel from Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow. I wrote an entire detailed blog post all about our Sleepy Hollow couples costumes.
Cry Baby or Grease
Whether you prefer the movie Grease or Cry Baby, get your 1950s leather pants on for these costumes! Put on some hair pomade and grab a cigarette and you’re all set for these sexy retro costumes.
I did my own version of Grease with my friend Saraid. You can read all the details and see pictures of our Good and Bad Sandy costume.
Anne of Green Gables and Gilbert Blythe
We dressed up as Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe while we visited Prince Edward Island on our Canada Road Trip, it wasn’t even for Halloween. But it’s a super easy costume and thriftable.

The Sound of Music
Dress up as one of cinema’s most romantic couples, Maria and Captain Von Trapp from The Sound of Music. They have a few different outfits like the ballroom dancing scene and when they’re on their honeymoon so you can pick whatever you like best!
Big Fish
Another costume on my wish list. I want to dress up as Sandy when she’s hanging laundry on the clothesline and Edward comes home. That’s my favorite scene!

Mad Men
A great 1960s option is dressing up as your favorite characters from Mad Men. Dressing up as Donald Draper is super easy, just wear a white button up and have a whiskey glass. Betty Draper wears a lot of 1950s style dresses and if you want to REALLY channel Betty you can carry a shotgun!
The Great Gatsby
One of the most romantic and tragic books in history is The Great Gatsby. If you want to party all night and dress in 1920s garb then spring for Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby.
Disney's Up costume
Dressing up as Carl and Ellie from Up is super easy and is a great costume to find secondhand. I modeled what we wore based on what Carl and Ellie had on in the picnic scenes. We ended up wearing things we already had in our closets.
It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
Pick out your favorite Charlie Brown characters to dress up as! Personally I’d love to dress up as Sally and Linus and take photos in a pumpkin patch.
Mrs. Maisel
There are so many couples to choose from in this show. Midge and Joel, Midge and Shy Baldwin, Midge and Susie, Abe and Rose, Joel and Mei Lin… the list goes on!
1950s married couple
If you have vintage clothing in your closet then this costume is a no brainer. Maybe throw on an apron and have a cigarette hanging out of your mouth and you’re all set!
Pride and Prejudice
Oh my gosh I’m DYING to do this costume! I’ve been looking for an A-Line dress at thrift shops for the past two years so I can do this costume. I did find a $5 top hat for Mr. Darcy!
When Harry Met Sally
Another costume we did last year was from the iconic movie When Harry Met Sally. This movie was released in 1989 so dress in late 80s or early 90s fall attire.
I hope you found this list inspiring for your vintage couple costume dreams! If you have another retro couples Halloween costume idea that I missed please leave it in the comments! Since you’re in the Halloween spirit be sure to visit the section of my blog dedicated to vintage Halloween posts.
